Tsunami Waves On Pacific Pond



This animation from NOAA shows the propagation of tsunami waves generated from the Honshu earthquake, March 11, 2011. Here at Beaver Creek we look out over the beach and think of the many people experiencing the shock of earth and water movement. What was too big to move becomes the toy of planetary motion. Some day we will have a big one here in Oregon and the mirror image will be produced.

This NOAA picture shows the predicted wave heights and propagation times for the 3/11/2011 tsunami.

Alsea Ethnography And Beaver Creek Marsh

The Alsea people lived near Beaver Creek marsh before homesteading and farming began in the area after 1850.  Two important sources for ethnographic information about the Alsea people are articles by Frachtenberg (1920) and Drucker (1939).  
Frachtenberg collected Alsea texts and myths, which give a picture of characters and cosmology that are important to the Alsea people.  He made extensive comparisons between Alsea myths and those of other tribes in surrounding regions.  He concluded that the Alsea did not have unique mythical traditions, instead sharing myths with other tribes and acting as a transition region between southwestern and northwestern tribes by combining collections of myths from both regions.  The Alsea did not have creation myths, but instead accepted that the world was always created.  They told tales about the characters inhabiting the world.  
A prominent feature of Alsea myths is the prevalence of the explanatory element and its importance.  Many examples are recorded by Frachtenberg and these reflect the detailed knowledge about the natural world that the Alsea lived in.  Why Robin is timid.  Wren’s small size.  Why Crane spears fish at low tide.  Why Snipes cry during a fog.  Why Black Bear likes to dig up graves.  Beaver’s superiority over Black Bear.  Why Whale never comes to the mouth of a river.  Why Whale is washed ashore only near the village of a chief.  Why people fish with poles.  Why Snakes shed their skin.  Why Hawk bites off heads of other birds.  Why Woodpecker’s head is red.  Why Woodpecker’s head is white.  Why Flies crawl even after they are cut in two.  The existence of a legendary mountain that reaches to the sky.  Why Wolves like to kill Elk.  The origin of Salmon in the several rivers.  Names of certain places.  Origin of camas.  Rocks instead of a waterfall in a certain locality.  The differentiation of the People into various tribes.  Why Fur-Seal seeks refuge on land during a storm.  The existence of Fleas.  Why People boil and smoke Salmon.  Why Thunder lives in the sky.  The knots on a thimble berry stalk.  Why it is a bad omen to hear the cry of Kingfisher, especially as he flies over a smoking chimney.  Why Hawk has a twisted neck.  Why Black Bear acts occasionally like a human being.  The origin of Elk’s name (“Food”).  
There is an Alsea myth called “The Lost Seal Hunters” which is about people who lived at Seal Rock.  The story probably refers to the midden site at Seal Rock that has been studied with archaeological methods.  The story tells that there were two houses and two canoes at Seal Rock.  The people made all sorts of things for fishing, including ropes out of seal sinew and spears.  The story tells about hunting a seal and the things that needed to be done to capture and kill the seal.  One day, the hunters spear a seal which takes them far out into the ocean and south and they travel for several days until finally killing the seal.  They cut the seal loose and land where they do not recognize the people.  They beg some food, leave their canoe with the strange people, and walk north for several days along the shore until coming home to Seal Rock again.
Drucker collected information on Alsea ethnography including subsistence, houses, canoes, technology and weapons, dress, utensils, textiles, fire, tobacco and smoking, musical instruments, dogs, games, calender, eclipse, wealth, social life, individual life, first-salmon rites, and shamanism.  
The Alsea were fisher folk, with salmon being the most important species captured.  Traps and spears were considered the most effective means for fish capture, while nets and hooks were used less frequently.  Land animals were hunted with traps, snares, and bow and arrow.  Sea mammals were captured with harpoons and spears. Women prepared and preserved food that had been captured by fishing and hunting and contributed food that was gathered in carrying baskets.  With curved digging sticks, they dug camas and fern and skunk cabbage roots.  They also collected clams, mussels, berries, and greens. 
Winter houses were constructed as long houses in pits lined with cedar planks and roofed with gabled cedar planks.  Houses could hold from one to four families.  Tule mats were used as bedding, to sit on, and as floor coverings.  Other furniture included baskets, utensils, and household implements.  Temporary rectangular structures were constructed of reeds and light poles for seasonal fishing camps.  The Alsea had three types of canoes.  The larger Nootka canoe was purchased from northern traders and used for ocean fishing.  Smaller canoes were constructed by the Alsea from a single piece of wood, with similar bow and stern.  Canoes had paddles, poles, a bailer, and a painter, as well as fishing gear.  Wood working was proficient but did not include ornamentation.  For wood working, stone tools were little used, while shell, horn, and bone were widely used.
Household items were simple and effective.  Two kinds of receptacles were used.  Cooking vessels and bowls were carved from maple or alder.  Cooking vessels were large and trough shaped, while bowls were smaller and round.  Other containers were basketry.  Split spruce roots were twined to make deep, round water buckets and berry baskets.  Other baskets were flexible bags, woven out of tule and tough beach grass, in the shape of a blunt wedge, wider at the top than at the bottom.  Smaller baskets of the same shape were often made of finer work and decorations.  Cordage was made with beach grass, the inner bark of willow, or tule.  Rope was made by braiding cordage together.  Tule mats were made by sewing with a long, curved wooden needle.  Musical instruments included bone whistles, wooden flutes, roof boards hit with poles for drums, and a buzzer, constructed of a wooden disk, spun with two twisted cords, that produced a buzzing sound.  Fire was kindled with a simple drill of hardwood and a willow hearth.  Heating and cooking fires were built of sticks laid against a backlog.  The fireplace in the house was not a pit, but on the level of the rest of the floor.  
When a person became ill, a shaman was sent for.  The shaman used amulets according to instructions from her helper spirits, as seen in dreams and visions during initial training.  Shamans would have amulets of animal fur or feathers, face paint, and a wide belt of elk hide.  They would also bring a set of carved sticks from thumping against the roof boards.  At the patient’s side the shaman sang, accompanied by spectators.  Then the shaman began to dance and display tricks taught by the helper spirits.  As the dance progressed, the shaman moved into a trance state and diagnosed the patient’s malady.  Sickness could be caused by a disease object in the patient’s body, which was then removed.  To extract a disease object, the shaman either sucked it out or drew it out with her hands.  When the shaman had the object firmly, two assistants grasped the shaman by the wide leather belt and drew back.  If the shaman sucked the object out, it was placed in the shaman’s hands and plunged into a basket of water to weaken it.  Then the shaman showed the small whitish thing to onlookers.  If the shaman could not cure the patient, she was free to say so or suggest another shaman that may effect a cure.  
If the patient’s soul had been displaced by the disease object, the shaman sang, sending the helper spirit to retrieve the soul.  When a person died, their soul traveled swiftly northward to the place where it crossed in a canoe to the Land of the Dead and did not return.  In soul-loss sickness, the soul seems to have loitered along the way, so that the shaman’s helper spirit could overtake and return it to the patient’s body. 
Shamans also were called upon for other tasks associated with magic.  These included curing a failure of the salmon run, or other food shortage.  These events were caused by disease objects being placed in the rivers or places for food.  The shaman sang and danced to see and remove the object with the assistance of her helper spirits. Shamans bathed mourners after burial of kin and after a prescribed period to remove taboos placed on them.  Shamans sang and danced to predict the future, especially with regards to food abundance or famine.  A shaman’s life required much training and preparation and could be rewarding with wealth and prestige.  However, if the shaman was ever accused of witchcraft or black magic, she was fearful, with her life in danger from ambush by angry patients and their relatives. 

The Alsea calender was based on moon cycles.  The name of each month was determined by the particular berries picked or games played at that period only.  Examples: February month for spear throwing game, March month for top spinning, April month for rolling hoops, May month for picking salmon berries, July month for picking salal berries, August month when salmon arrive, October month when they cease drying salmon, and December month for telling myths. Eclipse of the moon was caused by great flocks of birds, chiefly birds of prey- eagles, hawks, and ravens who flew up to fight the moon. When an eclipse happened, the People turned dishes and even canoes upside down, so as not to catch some of the moon's blood.

Seal Rock Archaeology

Linda Ann Clark completed a thesis at Oregon State University in 1988 on the archaeology of a site in Seal Rock, Oregon (Site 35LNC14). She also wrote a chapter on this site in Prehistory of the Oregon Coast.  This site is a shell midden located a couple of miles south of the Beaver Creek marsh, so probably reflects life for Alsea people who lived near the marsh.  Details of the study should be consulted in her thesis.  This post gives a general summary of interesting findings about the site.   
The site was part of a seasonal land use pattern.  Clark states: 
“The land use pattern suggests that during the winter people lived in villages adjacent to estuaries, from the river mouth upstream to tidewater. By spring, stored supplies were depleted and sea mammals were establishing rookeries.  At this time village populations began to disperse, possibly moving to the outer coast or to upriver camps. During the spring and early summer, many of the outer coast shell midden sites were utilized as resource procurement camps for shell fish, fish and sea mammals. At the same time, trips into the adjacent uplands were probably conducted to hunt terrestrial mammals and collect plant resources. In the mid to late summer, anadromous fish (especially salmon) were running, and populations may have moved to fishing camps where fish were caught, dried, and stored for the winter. At the end of fall fish runs, people moved back to their winter villages.”
The faunal remains suggest that the Seal Rock site was used for subsistence harvesting of nearshore and terrestrial resources during the spring to mid or late summer months.  Radiocarbon dating suggested that initial use of this site began around A.D. 1575.  The site was probably abandoned prior to A.D. 1830, as Euro-American trade goods are lacking.  Intense white contact and trading along the Oregon coast occurred about 1830-1840.
Ethnographic accounts place the Seal Rock area in the Alsea culture territory.  It is possible that a village named Ku-tau’-wa was located at the site of the midden.  No dwellings have been excavated at the site, and this may be due to the limited scope of excavation or that they were destroyed by road building activities for Highway 101 that ran through the midden.    
Several types of artifacts were found and analyzed at the site.  These include tools made of stone, bone, shell, and antler.  Stone tool types included knife, scraper, graver, drill, adze, abrader, grinding stone, hammer stone, pestle, and projectile point.  Antler and bone tool types included wedge-chisel (wood working), pointed bone, awl, harpoon valves for fish and pinnipeds, tine, whistle (bird bone), fish hook, and ornament (pendant, bracelet, or band).  The composition and style of artifacts suggests technological and trading influences from both northwestern Washington tribes and northwestern California tribes, with the Alsea culture being near the southern and northern boundaries of the adjacent cultures, respectively.   
Previous studies of artifacts by other researchers identified pinniped, fish, and mammal remains at the site.  Pinniped and mammal species include Steller’s sea lion, harbor seal, northern fur seal, California sea lion, harbor porpoise, sea otter, North American beaver, cottontail rabbit, coyote-dog-wolf, raccoon, river otter, elk, deer, mole, and small-eared vole.  Fish species include surfperch, greenlings, flatfish, rockfish, sculpins, and salmon.  The Seal Rock site and surrounding area was a rich area for food acquisition and processing during this period.

Sea Foam

Sea foam may appear when the surf is up at Ona Beach, where Beaver Creek flows out into the ocean.  The foam can look like snow, creatures, clouds, and other ephemeral phenomena.  Foam can give us a look at the invisible world of water currents and wind pressure.  Waves stir up the water and inject air into a foamy exuberance full of joy.  The foam moves over the top of the water in breezes and with the water, scurrying back and forth across the beach with incoming and outgoing waves and up and down the creek.  Then as quickly as it comes, the foam can disappear as surf calms down and the weather turns mild and sunny.

Art Show Extended!


The art exhibit, “Responding to Elements of Space:  Art Inspired by Beaver Creek State Natural Area” has been extended through the month of November, closing on Nov 27th, at the Newport Visual Arts Center Upstairs Gallery.

Beaver Creek and Ona Beach State Park Planning

Recently there was a public meeting of staff from Oregon State Parks and interested citizens on the early stages of developing master plans for the Beaver Creek and Ona Beach State Parks.  The overall process, vision, and timing for the master plans was presented and comments from citizens were listened to and recorded.  There were many comments about access to the parks, need for careful consideration of resources and possible overuse of the parks, especially Beaver Creek, and the need to engage the public in the planning process.  
State Parks has a well-developed planning process that is used for all state parks.  The public is invited to participate through several channels.  A relatively new initiative is called Centennial Horizon which includes long-term planning for all of Oregon’s state parks.  Further information can be seen in the planning section of the State Parks website.  There will be a Beaver Creek and Ona master plan website in a month or two, and in the meanwhile you can send input and comments to Kathy.Schutt@state.or.us or contact the State Parks office in Newport at 541-265-8179.
I have found the staff at State parks to be receptive and responsive to comments by citizens.  If you have a concern or have some words of praise about their planning and activities, let them know.  A comment was made at the recent planning meeting that suggested that State Parks is not responsive to public input and hides their actions, because they did not have enough widely publicized public meetings and open forums about Beaver Creek and Ona Beach.  State parks can be reached any time during business hours and the staff are easy to talk to.  Get involved and don’t wait for an invitation to a public meeting.  
Some interesting planning considerations were introduced at the recent meeting.  The planning process looks out over the next 100 years, as included in the Centennial Horizon.  Master plans will be developed for the Beaver Creek Park and for Ona Beach Park, which are separate but adjacent state natural area and state park.  The state natural area emphasizes wetland and riparian conservation, trails, and interpretation, with only very limited development.  The state park could provide more typical coastal park uses, including a possible low impact campground near the beach.  There will be a complete assessment of resource sensitivity and quality recreation needs.  Resources include habitats, plant communities, wetlands and riparian habitats, hazards, water features, topography, soils, historic and prehistoric culture, and scenic features.  Any needed development in Ona Beach Park will be placed in low quality areas, with buffers to neighbors and higher quality resources. 
Several citizens expressed concern about the possibility for “loving nature to death” in Beaver Creek Park and there was discussion of how to limit public access.  This topic will continue to be an important consideration for Beaver Creek Park.  Real answers to this concern will come from careful observation of public behavior in the park in coming years and using this data in planning further park actions.  One suggestion was that access and trails to Beaver Creek Park should be limited at first and then slowly opened up through time to conserve its unique qualities from human impact.

Clearly Apparent Yet Not Existent

The creek flows through the marsh and out into the ocean, surrounded and suffused by space.  There are many examples here of what is clearly apparent yet not existent.  We can call these examples metaphors and symbols for the nature of things.  We objectify our existence, separating ourselves from other objects and beings and declare us and them.  Objects and subjects are like a creek in its bed, wind in space, waves on water, reflections in mirrors, clouds in sky, and dreams in sleep.  Objects and subjects are illusory as they have no independent, lasting self-nature and are interdependent in a web of cause and effect.  This very dependence is the appearance that we call object and make philosophy and science with.  Since we are not omniscient, we are not able to see all of these causes and conditions.  We believe strongly in the independence of objects, as if they were separate and distinguishable, and say that they have self-nature.  We especially have a strong sense of ego; that we are independent, with self-will. 
The ego is like the emperor in the story of “The Emperor’s New Clothes”.  Two (duality) tailors (illusion) weave clothes (objects) for the emperor (ego) that are so light and fine (desirable) as to appear invisible (no cause and effect), especially to anyone too stupid or incompetent (shame) to appreciate their quality.  A child (original nature) eventually saw the emperor in his new clothes and recognized that he was naked.  But the emperor could not acknowledge this nakedness (awareness) and continued on, walking through the streets (the world) with the illusion of his new clothes.        
How deluded we are.  By maintaining this separation of subjective self and objective other, we fail to see what is.  We grasp on to solidity of self and objects as if they did not constantly change and depend on each other.  Even if we recognize change, we do not believe that it applies to our precious self and others.  We are afraid when objects change, as this represents loss and gain of something desirable or abhorrent.  We fail to see that birth, life, and death are a continuum, with the magical properties of spontaneous appearance and disappearance of consciousness that are dependent upon subject and objects.  This cycle rests upon unchanging awareness, which we sense but cannot see.  We are this awareness, which gives rise to the display of subjects and objects; just like waves forming and dissolving into water, reflections arising and disappearing in mirrors, clouds forming and dissolving into sky, and dreams appearing and disappearing in sleep.  The water, mirrors, sky, and sleep are metaphors for awareness and are not changed by this display.  Recognizing the illusory nature of display, we can return to our nature and be complete. 


When we are not attached to our conclusions, concepts, and training about existence, then we are free to experience our nature in the vast ocean of space which is mind.  We easily move through the causes and conditions that surround us.  Then we become what we are, omniscient awareness in the unending web of interdependence.  Everything is as it should be in the unending dance of change.  Relax and enjoy every emotion, thought, and perception as the illusions that they are, without the anxiety of grasping and fixation.

The Story Of Fog Woman (How Salmon Came Into The Rivers)

Raven and his two slaves were fishing but caught only bullhead fish.  When fog came up, they began paddling back to the camp.  Suddenly a young woman appeared in the canoe.  She was Fog Woman, the daughter of Chief Fog on the Salmon.  Raven married her.
Fog Woman was skilled at basket making and made a finely woven, watertight basket of spruce root.  Raven complemented her on it.  ‘Watch what it can do’, she said.  She dipped her hands into the fresh water in the basket and brought out a large salmon.  Fog Woman dipped her hands into the basket daily, and fished out a salmon.  Soon the fish drying rack was filled with rows and rows of dried and smoked salmon and the storehouse was full. 
Raven boasted about all the salmon he had and this annoyed his wife.  They quarreled fiercely and eventually Raven hit Fog Woman with a dried salmon.  She ran out of the house and down to the beach, followed by her husband, who reached out to grab her.   
But as he did so, she turned into fog.  Then all the dried and smoked salmon left the storehouse and the racks and followed her into the sea, leaving Raven holding a useless bullhead.  
Nowadays it is Fog Woman’s daughter, Creek Woman, who lives at the head of every stream, and it is she who brings the salmon back up the streams from the sea every year.

View From The Hill

Views from the hill in the Beaver Creek State Natural Area which is 1.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Beaver Creek drains into the ocean at Ona Beach State Park. You can walk trails and fields on the hill. Enter the hill in the natural area by turning onto Beaver Creek Rd. from U.S. Hwy. 101 at Ona Beach State Park. Drive 1 mile on Beaver Creek Rd. and then turn right onto South Beaver Creek Rd. and go south, crossing two bridges. After the second bridge, there is an entrance to the natural area on the left (east) side of the road. Park nearby and enjoy your walk!

Seasonal Water Levels In The Marsh

There is a seasonal change in the average water level of Beaver Creek Marsh.  In the months between April and October, the water is lower in the marsh, while between November and March, the water is higher.  The seasonal average water level changes approximately 2 feet.  As water level changes, water moves into and out of the margins of the marsh and large areas are flooded or dried.  Zonation of plant species in the marsh depends in part upon this seasonal flooding and the relative tolerance of species to flooding.

Looking at the monthly mean tidal height in South Beach, which is 7 miles to the north, we can see the same seasonal cycle of average water levels that is evident in the marsh.  In November - March, sea level is above annual mean sea level (MSL).  In April - October, sea level is below MSL.  The change in monthly mean sea level over an annual cycle is approximately 1 foot.  While monthly mean sea level appears to control water level in the marsh, it does not explain the magnitude of change.  Monthly mean rainfall in South Beach follows the same pattern shown by tidal height, with higher rainfall in fall and winter months and lower rainfall in spring and summer months.  The additional rainfall input to the Beaver Creek watershed during the fall and winter probably accounts for the greater magnitude of water level rise in the marsh, beyond that associated with tide level.

This description is oversimplified since ocean beach sand levels and debris dams can contribute to varying water levels in the marsh, but their effects generally conform to the same seasonal cycle of higher and lower average water level.  Superimposed on the average seasonal cycle are the additional effects of daily cycles of tides, wave height, wind, and rainfall.  During the rainy season, these factors can push water back into the creek and marsh as rainfall puts water into the watershed.  During the dry season, effects of weather are minimal and slow draining of the water table generally lowers marsh levels.

Early Surveying And Mapping On Beaver Creek, Part 2

In a previous post an early GLO map (1882) of the lower Beaver Creek Marsh showed that the creek bed ran approximately in the position of the present County Road 602.  We assume that the GLO survey map was accurate. Lets look at some later maps to see if Beaver Creek changed its course.

Survey plat maps from ca. 1898-1904 and 1916 show that a large increase in land ownership occurred and that lower Beaver Creek had not changed its course from 1882.

A 1937 map of the proposed development for the Beaver Lake Club shows a clearly altered course for lower Beaver Creek.  Apparently the creek bed was altered sometime between 1916 and 1937.  We are searching for map records and oral histories within this time to help identify when the change occurred and what the probable causes were.

Interestingly in the 1937 map, Beaver Creek flows straight into the Pacific Ocean.  In the 1950 map, the mouth begins to curve and has meandered to a more northerly position.  The 1984 map shows even more pronounced bends in the creek mouth.  In recent years the creek has changed again towards a straighter path into the Pacific Ocean.

Water Level In Beaver Creek Marsh


Water level in the marsh changes on many time and space scales.  EPA gives a clear definition that shows the importance of water level to a wetland:
Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil, or is present either at or near the surface of the soil all year or for varying periods of time during the year, including during the growing season. Water saturation largely determines how the soil develops and the types of plant and animal communities living in and on the soil. Wetlands may support both aquatic and terrestrial species. The prolonged presence of water creates conditions that favor the growth of specially adapted plants and promote the development of characteristic wetlands soils.
Water level changes on a daily and seasonal basis depending on rainfall, the tidal cycle at the mouth of the creek, and the amount of sand that blocks the creek on the beach.  Storms can move sand off the beach, while high surf and tides can push water back into the marsh.  Water levels are generally higher in the fall and winter and lower in the spring and summer.

Other events can alter water levels.  Large floods can redistribute sediment and organic debris through the marsh, altering drainage patterns by blocking or clearing smaller streams and culverts that drain through the marsh to Beaver Creek.  Beavers can build dams in smaller creeks and culverts, raising water level in areas of the marsh.  Drainage can be increased and water levels lowered by ocean scouring of the creek mouth and by clearing beaver dams and culverts.

Changes in water level are a natural part of the marsh.  How often and where they occur can have an important influence on the types of plants in the marsh.  Looking at the marsh, patches of different species can be seen.  Because of the relationships between species occurrence, soil type, and water level, these patches reflect the varying water levels in space and time.  



Grazing by nutria and beaver can also change vegetation patterns.  Pollen and other plant remains from cores of marsh soil can be analyzed to map the history of marsh formation and spatial change in vegetation and soil.  Dead trees can be seen in the marsh.  These trees show that water level has increased with time and the trees became inundated during their growing season and died.


The historical presence of tsunamis can be detected in marsh cores and drowned forests.  Reading the history of the marsh through vegetation patterns is a wonderful mystery story.

Floods In Beaver Creek Marsh


In early February 1996, the Beaver Creek Marsh filled with water and there was two feet of water on N. Beaver Creek Rd. (County Road 602) that passes through the lower marsh.  Flooding in the Beaver Creek Marsh is a relatively common occurrence but water on the road is less common.

A normal function of wetlands is to buffer stream flows by absorbing large inputs of water.  These inputs can be associated with rainfall, blockage of the stream mouth, storm waves, and tsunamis.  Notable flood years associated with high rainfall in the Beaver Creek watershed include 1861, 1890, 1909, 1927, 1953, 1955, 1964, 1974, 1982, 1983 and 1996, while floods in 1941, 1948 and 1949 were blamed on high tides and sand deposits that blocked the mouth of the creek (USFS 2001).  In December 2 & 3, 1967, large storm waves struck the coast and washed large logs through Ona Beach State Park, across U.S. Highway 101, and up into Beaver Creek Marsh (DOGAMI, Bulletin 81 1973).  On March 29, 1964, 11 foot tsunami waves passed through Ona Beach State Park, across U.S. Highway 101, and into Beaver Creek Marsh.

Several newspaper articles from local newspapers during the 1940’s and 1950’s that were compiled by Range Bayer describe frequent flooding in the lower Beaver Creek and at the mouth (flooding at Beaver Creek was noted in articles dated February 25, 1926; March 4, 1926; December 25, 1941; November 18, 1948; November 17, 1949; and November 6, 1952). This 1948 article from the Waldport Record describes the conditions at the mouth of the creek: 
During the freak storm of two weeks ago, high waves did so much damage at Beaver Creek that the normal channel became clogged with debris and sand. The creek could not empty into the ocean as usual with the result that its waters backed up inland. The road was soon covered with water and the mill-pond of the C and H Lumber Company over flowed. The mill was forced to shut down and the cars of people living up the Creek had to be towed in and out by the company trucks. Finally road conditions got so bad that not even these could get through. Dynamiting to open the channel was the only solution and this the company proceeded to do. A few hours later, the creek had found its bed nearly 3 feet below the level of the sand deposited by the high water. Everyone in the vicinity is grateful to the lumber company and the State and County workers who spared neither time nor energy in this emergency.

A December 8, 1949 article from the Lincoln County Times reported on a hearing for Beaver Creek flood control. It describes the cause of frequent flooding this way: 
Conditions at the mouth of Beaver Creek have been such that ocean swells and tides have prevented the natural flow of the stream. This has resulted in the annual flooding of many acres of good farm land; as well as the formation of a permanent swamp. Beneath this swamp lies about a thousand acres of peat soil which can be surpassed no where as far as fertility and productiveness is concerned.
In the mid-60‘s, farmers of Beaver Creek valley persuaded the County Road Department to obtain a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers to dredge the mouth of Beaver Creek and maintain the mouth sill at the bedrock level.  Maintenance of this level caused the water level in the marsh to fall and expose farmer’s land upstream.  This permit was active until the mid-90’s and has not been renewed.

The Beach Was The Highway

In the early days of Lincoln County, there were very few roads connecting the length of the area.  The beach was the main highway and was used to transport mail, passengers, and supplies via horseback, wagon or buggy.  Each creek had to be forded, and larger rivers and bays were crossed by boat.  The winter storms made travel even more treacherous, with winds & high surf, floating logs & debris, and erratic currents & sneaker waves.

The following excerpt is quoted from an oral history of Paul Keady, recorded in the mid-1970’s [from the Oregon Coast History Center Library, Oral History Collections].
“Well, the odd thing about doctors in those days, they not only made house calls, but out here in the boondocks of Lincoln County, they would often take a horse and buggy, and take off to Waldport or Beaver Creek, or up the Alsea or somewhere--hoping to get there in time to assist some homesteader’s wife in the delivery of a child.  

On one of the occasions, when [Dr. Belt] was headed south of the Yaquina Bay, down the beach, when the beach was the highway, in the wintertime and stormy conditions with his one horse and buggy, an unusually large wave came, and caught him and the horse.  He saw it coming, and he turned up into one of the little alcoves that are off the beach...I know exactly which one it was.  He got as far from the wave as he could.  The water filled up in there, and he and the horse and buggy and all floated around for a while.  Then the water receded, without any of the logs breaking the horse’s legs or ruining the wagon, and he was not swept out to sea.  

And I, in my youthful eagerness asked him, ‘what did you do then, Doc?’  Well, he looked at me and said, ‘There was nothing else to do.  I merely straightened the horse around, and went on down the beach.’  And he got to Waldport--I hope in time to help some woman with her delivery...Doctors did those things in those days.”



The “Beach Highway” was used until the completion of the Roosevelt Highway (now Highway 101) in the 1930’s.  Makes me appreciate the bridges and pavement and engineering feats that were required to build that road.  And to be able to travel inside a warm, dry car in the foulest of winter weather!
